Grinding

Grinding is carried out in order to eliminate the sharp, cutting edge of the glass. This process requires the constant use of water to lubricate the tool.
Vetrerie Dal Pian is equipped with new-generation, digitally controlled grinding machines, which guarantee high levels of dimensional tolerance. Depending on the shape to be cut, bilateral grinding or CNC machines are used which remove debris and finish the glass edge in different ways, depending on the process intended:

  • polished edge: as the term says, the edge is polished.
  • rough edge: the edge is not polished but matt, and is more uneven.
  • tilted grinding from 0 to 45 degrees: tilting may vary to meet design requirements.
  • bevelling: glass edges are ground to a height of 10–40 mm., with an angle of around 7 degrees with respect to the glass surface.

Grinding is a process that is necessary to enable the glass to be subsequently tempered (or toughened), as well as to achieve a vast range of aesthetic effects.
The edges are occasionally also ground to limit the thermal shock phenomenon, although tempering of the glass is recommended for this.
